Doctors for America is once again promoting a whole host of left-wing policies—even those not directly related to doctors, or healthcare. Gun control is a major plank of their agenda. The group regularly endorses proposals that would restrict firearms and sided with the most extreme gun-control advocates. Notably, Doctors for America recently supported the passage of Illinois’ assault weapon ban.
This not-so-subtle advocacy is not new for Doctors for America: the group has repeatedly worked to advance gun control efforts and coordinated with Democratic lawmakers and liberal groups to do so.
In 2013, U.S. Senator Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) acknowledged the group by name when announcing a new bill creating a federal ban on semiautomatic rifles. And in 2015, the group joined with Democratic politicians to demand Congress view gun violence as a public health epidemic.
Doctors for America’s aggressive message on gun control and other hot-button issues begs the question: is the group really putting public health over partisan politics? Doctors for America wishes the public would forget it began as Doctors for Obama; but the group’s agenda makes that nearly impossible.
